Artist Statement

I am a self-taught artist, born and raised in Ada, OK. I started painting a few years ago, shortly after retiring. My goals were simple – to have fun while learning something new, and to reconnect with my creative side.

Little did I know of the passion for art I would find. With its ability to blend and blur into endless beautiful hues, oil is my medium of choice.

Subject matter is important to me, but I also love the freeing qualities of the abstract. To that end, I would describe my style as representational realism. I have agricultural roots, and a long standing love affair with the American Cowboy. Livestock and working cowboys find their way onto my canvas more often than not, but I am also inspired by wildlife, and the Native American people and their culture.

Today, I reside in Durant, OK, with my husband of 31 years, Roger, who has encouraged and accompanied me on this wonderful journey of art. We love to travel, hike, and explore, so inspiration is never far away.

Lauri's Back Road Story

Lauri was born and raised in Ada, OK. Her family still owns and operates a beef cattle ranch south of Ada. Lauri received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Oklahoma State University in 1985, and began a business career in Government that she continued for the next 10 years, moving from Oklahoma to Texas, to Iowa, and to Kentucky.

After moving back to Oklahoma in 1995, Lauri began work in the area of Public Education, which allowed her more time with her husband and two children. Lauri retired in 2015, and began to pursue other interests. She picked up a paint brush in 2016, and began her journey of art. She began dabbling in watercolor, then acrylics, and finally oils, which is her medium of choice today.

Along the way, Lauri received valuable tutelage and instruction from Oklahoma City artists Lauren Florence and Behnaz Sohrabian, and Colorado Artist Peggy Judy.
